CDAE HV Substation Engineer

We are supporting GE UK Grid Solutions with the appointment of a CDAE HV Substation Engineer, working across National Grid Electricity Transmission projects.
This is a senior electrical design and approval role, with responsibility for the delivery and formal sign-off of HV/EHV substation design packages in accordance with National Grid’s design management procedures.
Rate: up to 73p/hr UMB (inside IR 35)
Location: Stafford- 3 days onsite/ 2 days WFH + occasional visits to customers’ sites
Duration: a long-term contract
Key Responsibilities
Design & Delivery
- Complete and maintain the relevant section of the Design Intent Document (DID), ensuring design proposals comply with NGTS, SDS, and CDS requirements.
- Prepare, check, and submit Design Packages (SUB-DP01, SUB-DP02, etc.) for Design Compliance Audit, ensuring they are holistic, standalone, and error-free.
- Sign off Design Compliance Audit Assurance Reports (DCAARs), confirming full review and approval of all drawings and calculation reports within each package.
- Manage design change control post-audit: record changes on Design Change Notices (DCNs), risk assess, classify as Minor or Significant, and approve within discipline.
- Ensure all proposed plant and equipment is suitable for its intended use, compliant with NG Technical Specifications, and has no restrictions adversely impacting the design solution.
- Ensure Type Registration compliance for all applicable plant/equipment in accordance with NG/ET/SR183.
- Lead and deliver primary plant designs for HV/EHV substations (AIS, GIS, and HVDC as applicable) in line with project scope and programme.
- Develop and review general arrangement drawings, section drawings, and 3D models; review and approve vendor drawings and specifications.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Attend and actively contribute to Design Review Meetings (DRMs) and Hazard Review Meetings (HRMs) as required by the project design team.
- Coordinate with the Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) on cross-discipline design interfaces and overall design programme.
- Liaise with NGET Design Assurance Engineers (DAEs) during Design Compliance Audits, responding to queries and resolving issues within agreed timescales (28 calendar days).
- Support the Principal Designer Representative (PDR-Del) in identifying and mitigating hazards within the HV design, including Impressed Voltage risks.
- Coordinate with interfacing disciplines (P&C, Civil, OHL, HV Cable) to ensure design coherence and compliance across packages.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support to junior engineers within the HV Substation design team.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure full compliance with NGET Design Management procedures (NG/ET/SR188) throughout the project lifecycle, from DID development through to Design Package submission and design change control.
- Ensure compliance with applicable national regulations, including UK Health & Safety regulations (CDM 2015) and safe-by-design principles.
- Manage Technical Deviation Requests (NG/ET/SR188.08) where deviations from NGTS or policy are required, ensuring proper justification and approval.
- Coordinate with Design Assurance on Design Compliance Audits, ensuring timely submission and resolution of any audit findings.
- Ensure that DID Freeze occurs within 12 weeks of contract award and that subsequent changes follow the formal change management process.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Electrical / Power / Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in HV/EHV substation primary design, with demonstrable experience in a design approval or lead design role.
- Strong knowledge of NGET Design Management processes (NG/ET/SR188), including DID development, DCAAR sign-off, and Design Package submission.
- Thorough understanding of UK Transmission standards (National Grid, SSE, SPEN, NGED, UKPN, etc.) and National Grid Technical Specifications (NGTS).
- Experience with Design Review Meetings (DRMs), Hazard Review Meetings (HRMs), and formal design change control processes.
- Familiarity with Type Registration requirements (NG/ET/SR183) and Technical Deviation processes.
- Proficiency in CAD tools and awareness of BIM/3D tools (Revit, Navisworks) advantageous.
- Eligibility for formal CDAE appointment via NG/ET/SR188.12; existing entry on NGET’s master record of CDAE/LCDAE individuals preferred.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to engage NGET DAEs, clients, and project stakeholders.
